This is my ongoing exploration of the typological project set by German photographer August Sander with his portraits of the German people. The biggest proponent of the typological method was Bernd and Hilla Becher, photographed various types of industrial buildings. They thought that the variations within types of objects would start to sing when grouped together. My interest in ball jointed dolls started with Hans Bellmer and his book La Poupee, photographs of the ball jointed dolls he created. He sought freedom in imaginative play. I'm hoping that the images that I create will not only express the variations between dolls, but that their individuality will emerge as well. I seek to document the identity and creativity that drives the ball jointed doll community today.
